Selective pruning varies by plant type, with broadleaf evergreens pruned only to remove broken or unattractive branches. For perennials, cutting finished flowering stems encourages basal growth and, sometimes, more blooms. Bearded iris should be divided in late fall or spring with careful rhizome handling.
