Fall Seeding Alfalfa In Late Summer Forage Gardens

Alfalfa should be seeded in late August or early September for best results says the University of Maryland agronomy staff. It needs well drained soil, pH 6.5 to 7.0, adequate phosphate and potash, and can fix its own nitrogen after establishment. New varieties show weevil resistance, with WL 303 FD 100 Saranae Cayuga and Iroquois recommended. Williamsburg still advised. Seeding benefits from late summer rains. second best time is early spring. Fertilizer plans include 0-20-20 with boron and 5-10-15 band-seeded, followed by annual topdressing of 0-15-30 with boron. weevils and weeds require careful management. Frost kills many annual grasses, and herbicides like Eptam 3 lb acre preplant and 2 4-DB for mustards aid control. leafhopper control uses methoxychlor.
