CHICAGO AP Two chemists explained at the American Chemical Society meeting that a small amount of synthetic gum in laundering preparations helps keep clothes white. The gum, CMC carbomethyl cellulose, clings to fibers and prevents soil from redepositing, especially on cotton. It works with detergents and mineral salts but not in plain water, and is less effective on wool and synthetic fabrics.

Manslaughter charge presented to Maryland grand jury

A Montgomery County Grand Jury began hearing charges against 32 year old iron worker Joseph P Gaughan of Folsom Pennsylvania in the bit run death of Mrs Wartha Hicks and her 1 month old son Andrew in Bethesda on June 12. Prosecutor Alger Barbee said he will seek indictment on two counts of common law manslaughter.
