Major Peter's glass smashing myth at Montanverd home

Visitors recall a colonial tale at Montgomery County's Montanverd in the Darnestown Seneca area. Major Peter of Georgetown built the 1806 summer home on land bought from General Lafayette aide Montanverd. Humorous lore says the old gentleman tossed his glass into the fire after a drink, and the Harman family now lightly plays along, while Frank P. Harman Jr. notes his own ritual. The site, on a lone road above the Potomac, served as a summer retreat for generations, with Harman descendants linked to Frederick figures Edward and Robert Peter.
