Elk Survival and Ranch Fodder in Mountain Valleys

The elk persisted in the Middle Rocky Mountain States south of Yellowstone, wintering in valleys near the Tetons. Ranchers fenced haystacks and alfalfa, causing starvation for some elk despite settlers feeding others. The U S government later set aside land for the herd and created a ranch where thousands now gather to feed on hay after snow.
