Fish sales decline despite Pocomoke River concerns

In CRISFIELD, AP reports state officials’ assurances regarding health risks on the Pocomoke River contrast with sharp declines in Chesapeake Bay rockfish prices and demand. Rockfish buyers and charter boat operators see a ruined market, while researchers tie certain waterborne organisms to health issues, prompting river closures and wary consumers.

Nitrogen forces rethink of Bay cleanup target approach

New computer projections show nitrogen entering the Chesapeake Bay is higher than thought, raising the challenge to cut pollution by 40 percent by 2000. The model totals 226 million pounds a year from controllable sources, meaning 90 million pounds must be eliminated annually to meet the 40 percent goal, up from 74 million. Reassessing the goal, some urge retaining a 230 million pound cap while pursuing achievable reductions, as officials prepare for the October Bay Executive Committee meeting in Washington.

Manure furnace could aid farms with runoff problem

HAMPSTEAD AP Steve Vayda invents a manure burning furnace to heat chicken houses and reduce runoff pollution. The system melts sand to 1500 degrees then burns manure on a bubbling bed, yielding cleaner combustion. State and federal support, including a 50 thousand dollar equity stake, a 50 thousand dollar USDA loan, and a 20 thousand dollar Energy Department grant, backs the project as a potential environmental fix for the Eastern Shore farms.
