Baltimore Motorist Killed Driving Wrong Way on US 40
Cecil L. Gilliam 41 died at the scene when his eastbound car collided head on with a tractor trailer in the westbound lanes of US 40 two miles west of Mt. Airy. The truck, driven by Thomas W. Montgomery 52 of Lutherville, passed another vehicle and struck Gilliam’s car. The tractor-trailer jackknifed and was struck by a westbound car driven by Robert R. Rhoderick. Gilliam and Montgomery’s vehicles were destroyed. Rhoderick’s car incurred $900 in damage. State Police reported no charges.

Pony Killed By Auto On Route 26
A Shetland pony strayed from a Frederick pasture and was killed when it ran into Calvert H. Phillips’s southbound car on Md. 26 about 9:30 p.m. The pony, owned by John M. Crum, was worth 200 dollars and the car sustained 350 dollars in damage. No charges were filed. Police later rounded up four other ponies from the Crum property.

Emergency Low Interest Farm Loans Approved
Federal emergency loans at three percent interest have been approved for Frederick County and 10 other Maryland counties. H Bryce Hopkins, director of the Frederick Farmers Home Administration, said the loans replace losses caused by the drought to maintain normal farm operations. Loans are not grants and require farmers to have exhausted area credit and be unable to secure more funding.

Thurmont Man Sentenced to Three Years in Frederick County
Charles Milton Knott, 36, was found guilty on four charges after a fight near Frederick’s square corner. Judge Robert E. Clapp Jr. imposed one year for destruction of property, three years for resisting arrest, 60 days for disorderly conduct, and 60 days for intoxication.
