Preliminary 1971-72 enrollment figures show 20 622 students on opening day across Frederick County public schools. Kindergarten expansion and more first graders contributed to the rise from 19 389 last year, with 11 307 in elementary and 9 315 in secondary grades.
Frederick County Commissioners request authorization to hire 15 new Public Employment Program workers, joining six already hired, with total funding of 130000 for 21 positions from Sept 1 1971 to Aug 31 1972. The grant covers 117000 federal cash and 13000 in-kind county services, spanning county, city, and municipal posts.
The Lewistown Volunteer Fire Company plans its first parade this Thursday at 7 p.m. followed by a three day carnival through Saturday night. Fire teams are asked to assemble at Hessong Bridge and Angelberger Roads by 6:30 p.m. for a parade proceeding to Miller's Woods on the Lewistown Creagerstown Road. The event marks the fire company’s first parade in its year-old history. A riding lawn mower portable television and a scanner Monitor will be given away at the first annual supper on Oct. 16. Everyone invited to participate.
Fire calls include a 4 54 p.m. Monday automobile fire on North Bentz Street with Juniors responding and a 11 04 p.m. Friday drier fire at Emmitsburg Laundromat with Emmitsburg responding. Also a 9 58 p.m. Sunday automobile tire incident near Braddock Mountain Eastbound lane West Side. Ambulance calls show Emergency 28 Routine 9. Population noted as 18 males 3 females.
President Nixon will address a joint session at 12 30 p m EDT Thursday amid talks on the economy. Afterward the House and Senate will host a reception for Apollo 15 astronauts as leaders met on international economic policy with a Japanese delegation arriving later in the week to discuss trade.
No fatalities were reported in Frederick County but 18 people were injured in 21 accidents over the long Labor Day weekend. Nearby Virginia authorities said a young pedestrian was killed when struck near Lovettsville. Police used saturation patrols and 12-hour shifts to slow traffic during the holiday.
The 109th Great Frederick Fair runs Sept 21-25 with Governor Marvin Mandel appearances, Hank Williams Jr plus the Cheatin Hearts, Jack Kochman's Hell Drivers, and an 8 p.m. Sept 20 crowning of the Fair Queen. Tuesday features all county bands, judging across multiple departments, and a full carnival midway. Wednesday includes Mandel’s 2 p.m. arrival and a 3:30 p.m. Old Timer’s Parade with draft-horse exhibits.
Dr. John L. Carnachan, Frederick County Schools superintendent, backs Maryland committee on including contributions from all racial groups in curricula and eliminating derogatory generalizations. He supports race relations courses, black teacher recruitment, housing access challenges, and local integration debates while noting community resistance to bused integration and renovations at South Frederick Elementary.
City and State Police investigated a string of crimes including the beating and theft from Frank H. Shoemaker on North Market Street, a $196.54 safe theft at High's Dairy on East Patrick Street, and a group of youths forcing an 11-year-old boy to hand over about $1.50 on South Market Street. Also reported were burglaries near Clover Hill, a stolen stereo deck from a Parkview Apartments vehicle, and other minor thefts. Police charged several juveniles with petty larceny and assault and handed some suspects to juvenile authorities.
New York traders pushed the Dow Jones industrial average higher as the market stayed active. The 10 30 a m Dow up 4 82 points to 917 57 amid a wave of encouraging economic developments.
Traffic accidents across the nation claimed 591 lives during the three day Labor Day weekend. The National Safety Council had estimated 600 to 700 deaths on streets and highways for the period from Friday evening to Monday midnight. The Labor Day weekend toll last year was 612.
Maryland state legislators draw between session expense funds to furnish home district offices. Delegate Wallace Hutton bought a $939 walnut office unit described as multi use, including table surface desk filing case and credenza. He says it is a capital item and may return to the state or be bought back after his term.
Congress returns from recess as President Nixon shifts from welfare and revenue sharing to a broad tax package. A 10 percent investment credit and auto tax cut are debated while hearings set for Wednesday. Leaders anticipate action by October, though critics say the plan favors big business over individuals.
