Eisenhower cites defectors as security overhaul trigger
President Eisenhower said the defection of two NSA code clerks to Moscow highlights the need to review the entire security system. He urged steps to remove weak or treasonable individuals from sensitive posts while protecting individual rights. The defectors Bernon F. Mitchell and William H. Martin, ages 31 and 29, appeared at a Moscow press conference and accused the United States of threatening peace. A Capitol Hill hearing on the case is planned for September 16. The FBI and House Un American Activities Committee face questions about security files and possible links to the incident.
