First Gun at Sautysburg During Gettysburg Ceremonies
A coincidence arose at the dedication of the Illinois monuments when ex Governor Beveridge disputed the Eighth New York Cavalry’s claim to firing the first shot at Gettysburg. Lieutenant Marcellion E. Sores of the Eighth Cavalry was credited, with Colonel McCarty recalling his white gelding ride at the scene. Beveridge’s claim was supported by a veteran named Jones who described the shot. Afterward, Lincoln veterans toured the battlefield and Illinois officials departed for Washington, leaving the fate of delayed Illinois memorials unresolved.
