Mayor Ramsburg announced the ban on sprinkling and lawn watering can be lifted immediately after a calm canning season ends. Water levels at Fishing Creek reservoir remain three feet below full, but voluntary care will allow lifting as Fort Detrick aid and citizen cooperation helped avoid a serious shortage.
Citizens complain about branches over sidewalks. Mayor Ramsburg cites Frederick Code requiring nine feet of clearance and owner responsibility to trim. If not done after notice, the city will trim at owner cost and bill the charges to the owner. The mayor and Aldermen may sue to collect unpaid amounts.
The News will not publish on Labor Day. The business office will be closed the entire day while the editorial office opens after 4 p.m.
The Community Chest United Appeal Board set a $109 962 goal for the coming fund drive after budget review led by Glenn T. Swisher. J Harold Hooper, president, noted positive resident support and leadership, with drives in October and current progress described as satisfactory.
A 5 am quake near the center of Yellowstone National Park, felt across Ait Canyon and Mammoth, is described as the strongest since August, rattling a cafeteria and waking Labor Day visitors. A park official notes it follows milder shocks earlier that night.
Miss Sally Jones, 14, from Mount Pleasant near this city, won the county fair electric contest at Timonium for her demonstration on lighting to aid sight. Margaret Nicholson, New Midway, won a "very good" dairy foods award. Both had qualified via district competition at Cumberland. state winners were announced at a Timonium banquet.
A man shouting Help help murder in the northwest city section prompted a flood of calls to the police. Chief Charles V. Main and Lt. W. W. Corbin aided in locating him. He was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital by ambulance after resisting briefly and is described as deranged. He was moved along Pinewood Drive to the hospital with force used.
State Police report two crashes in the northern county caused substantial property damage. A 1957 Ford owned by Glen Shaizer was damaged after Geraldine Garner lost control near Blue Ridge Summit, crossing lawns and striking a tree. Garner and a passenger were minorly injured and Garner faced driving without license charges. A 1953 Mercury near Thurmont breached a blockade and hit a grader. Georgina Docteur was cited for excessive speed.
The Associated Press reports a car struck an embankment on Maryland Route 361 and U.S. 213 near Chestertown early Labor Day weekend, killing Earl Robert Siver 35 and Dorothy Siver 30 of Lynch. Trooper Gerryman said the couple likely were en route to Chestertown when the crash occurred.
In Chicago the Swift & Co walkout continues into its second day as unions press for higher wages and benefits while Wilson & Co avoids a strike with a Sept. 12 contract extension. The deal followed a 92 hour session with the United Packinghouse Workers of America and Amalgamated Meat Cutter and Butcher Workmen at the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.
The 25th annual Frederick County Volunteer Firemen's Association convention will be in Emmitsburg next Wednesday and Thursday with a parade on Thursday evening. George Danner chairs the host parade and prizes totaling 625 dollars are announced for various categories including best appearing unit and band. State Senator Samuel W Barrick will march as parade marshal with judges named and rain date if needed. A carnival sponsored by the Indian Lookout Conservation Club will also be held in conjunction with the convention.
Four Marines stationed at Beaufort Marine Air Station S.C. were killed in a head-on collision on U.S. 15 29 near Warrenton Virginia. The victims were Ronald Robinson 24 Russell E Dolen 21 Thomas W Buchanan 19 and George Waldman ig from Williamsport Pa. The driver of the tractor trailer Harry E Smith of Luray Va survived in satisfactory condition after the crash which occurred as the two vehicles collided.
The forecast calls for hot humid conditions over the weekend prompting hundreds of motorists to hit the highways for the last summer holiday. Highs around the upper 80s to 90s with nightly cooling into the 60s and a chance of thundershowers Monday.
EAST LANSING AP report says Capt. Thomas Grant stated no evidence disproves the disappearance tale of trooper Albert Souden. Police have found nothing to illuminate the trooper's vanishing as of the latest updates.
A Ford car was destroyed by fire early this morning after being parked in the driveway of Clifton W. Burns on North Market Street. The alarm came in shortly after four o clock. Burns operates a tavern and had parked the vehicle shortly before the blaze. The Juniors and the Uniteds answered the alarm.
President Eisenhower is concerned about the Laos crisis as Communists threaten the pro Western royal government. Press secretary Hagerty said the President is kept updated, will not comment on UN troop involvement, and may be back in Washington Monday after a Scottish golfing rest.
Washington AP reports Congress may reconvene for a special fall session to grant President Eisenhower authority to adjust government bond interest rates. The House voted 378 to 7 to repeal the 4 percent cap on long term bond yields, sending the measure to the Senate to boost F and H bond rates from 3 1/2 to 3 3/4 percent. Also, an accident on Route 15 near Lime Kiln damaged a State Police car about $200, with Trooper E L Nicewarner at the wheel. details unavailable.
Police urge motorists and children to use caution as ten women school guards are assigned to crossings to relieve traffic during the school opening. Chief Charles V. Main stresses following signals, staying on sidewalks, and assisting younger students, with rules and safety reminders for motorists cyclists and pedestrians.
A Frederick Chamber of Commerce release notes several gains across sectors. Building permits rose, post office receipts climbed to 26 525, and the Frederick Clearing House processed 52 286 104 in checks through July, with a 12 percent year over year rise. Telephones installed increased by 6 6 percent to 7 905, while electric customers rose 2 percent to 20 463. Edward C Hilfert 72 died in Appleton Wis He led Riverside Paper Corp and served on Spaulding Pulp Paper Co board.
In Townsend Wisconsin a mother Gloria Rouge Posselt 32 and seven children aged 1 to 16 were found dead or dying from suspected gas poisoning in a one room cottage. The mother remained hospitalized in critical condition as authorities investigated the gas source and timing of death.
City and state police announced continuous patrols as county and federal workers begin a three day weekend. Employers expect a brief pause in operations while holiday traffic peaks, with motorists urged to drive safely to avoid fatal statistics this Sunday and Monday.
John H. Basehore, former Adams County Republican chairman, shot himself at a summer college near Mount Crist. State Police Coroner C. G. Cri re listed death as self-inflicted. Basehore, about 55, formerly a deputy and justice of the peace, led Eisenhower farm efforts in the county. Brig. Gen. Joseph J. Tuity, farm chief of staff, was killed in a traffic accident Aug. 3 in Covington Louisiana.
