Pike officers face criminal action after turnpike damages ruling
In Doylestown Pennsylvania on September 5 Judge C B Staples ruled for the plaintiff, the company owning the Doylestown to Plumsteadville turnpike, in a $6000 back rentals and repair damages suit against the Philadelphia and Easton Railway. District Attorney Ryan then sought criminal charges against officers of both companies for failure to keep the road safe. The judge put the matter under advisement as to possible criminal action. The case centers on a deteriorated pike that has seen little repair since litigation began.

Taft Clears Way For Army Promotions
President Taft commuted the court martial sentence of dismissal for Captain Rutherford of the Twenty-fourth Infantry to a rank tailing pay and enabled the War Department to promote a number of officers. The Rutherford case had delayed promotions for several Army officers pending the outcome of this action. A separate report from Dover, Delaware notes a nine year old girl was struck and killed by lightning while protecting turkeys from a storm near Camden. In Rome, reports again question the Pope’s health with a slight swelling of the left toe but no cause for major concern.
