Fire at Francis Scott Key Hotel Overcomes Seven People

Twenty years ago seven people including two guests and five firefighters were overcome by smoke during a general alarm fire sweeping the fifth floor of the Francis Scott Key Hotel. Management cited smoking in bed in room 509 as the cause. More than 75 firefighters from four Frederick companies contained the blaze before it reached other rooms or floors. Damages were estimated up to $100,000, the largest Frederick fire since a 1971 blaze at Hiltner's furniture store. A faulty water main hindered firefighting, flooding stairs and elevators.
