Senate approves C and O Canal Park bill amid protests

The U S Senate passed a Beall Hyde sponsored measure creating a 165 mile Chesapeake and Ohio Canal national historic park despite objections from Hagerstown Chamber of Commerce and others. The plan would allow the National Park Service to acquire up to 15000 acres and authorize a 20 mile scenic parkway near Cumberland. Protests came from agricultural and conservation groups.
