The Milwaukee Avenue State Bank closed August 6 amid a fraud scandal involving Paul Stensland and associates. Officials pursued Stensland since August 13 with help from Tribune representatives and Assistant State's Attorney Olsen. A cable from Washington sought Moroccan surrender. The collapse affected over 22,000 families and sparked widespread hardship.

Herman Oelrichs of New York died Saturday aboard the steamer Kajeer Wilhelm der Graase while en route to this country. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Oelrichs of Newport and New York were social leaders with notable homes. Born in Daltonore, he led North German Lloyd’s New York affairs and was once a prominent long-distance swimmer and athlete. He served on the Democratic national committee and, in 1900, married Theresa Farr, daughter of Senator Farr of California, as an executor of a famous will contest.
The lightweights Gans and Nelson fought a grueling 42 rounds at Goldfield with Gans ahead on points. Nelson fouled in the final clinch, referee Siler awarded the win to Gans. Attendance roughly 5,000, purse $33,500, box office over $80,000. Gans showed remarkable endurance after breaking a hand in round 83.
