Clinton extends no fly zone with Iraq missile strike

President Clinton announced a southern no fly zone extension from the Kuwaiti border to Baghdad as B 52s and Navy ships fired 27 Tomahawk missiles at air defense targets in southwestern Iraq. Targets included SAM sites and radar networks near Nasiriyah Iskandariyah and Kut while Baghdad was spared. Congressional reaction was mixed but largely supportive, with leaders praising the action as a necessary response to Saddam Hussein’s abuses.
