The Cumberland Michigan contract to illuminate the city with electric burners went into effect yesterday, leaving the town lit by electricity. Separately, the Independent and Libor party of Louisiana was organized, endorsing the Republican national ticket. A Tennessee murder investigation involved an Evansville detective who was ordered to leave the state by masked men, and several violent incidents are reported including a fatal catfish horn wound in Alto, Illinois, and a Hungarian boarding house stabbing in Hazleton, Pennsylvania. Further items note political committee meetings in Chicago, a dying bishop in Georgia, and a failed assassination attempt on Captain W. T. Platt near Nyack, New York.
United States Senator Henry D B Anthony died in Providence at 1 15 pm after breakfast he was in usual health in the morning but suffered a vertigo attack and quickly declined.
The International Electrical Exhibition opened at noon with speeches by Mayor Smith and Gov. Pattison. Dignitaries, foreign visitors, and science leaders attended as machinery began moving, bells rang, and the fountain flowed. Exhibit preparations continue with some displays not yet ready.
In Capiz Harrison County two leading families, Nash and McCilan, are involved in a romance ending in tragedy. Miss McCihan fainted and died after a quarrel with James Nash who told her their relations should cease. Nash mourns deeply and claims he was only jesting, while the girl’s collapse and spasms preceded her death after 36 hours of unconsciousness.
A jovial picnic in Wolfsville on Saturday gathered a crowd around a bountiful repast prepared by kind ladies. Rain began around noon and lasted until about 4 pm causing a pause, then the crowd dispersed. By 5 pm the sky cleared and residents enjoyed the evening. The band later played at the home of Mr Samuel L Holter.

In Pittsfield Massachusetts on Saturday a 2:46 class race produced an entertaining incident described by the Springfield Republican as a collision involving Rev. William Smith of Otis driving Billy B. against Frank Alger with Electioneer. Both riders were unseated, Electioneer completed a lap twice unharmed, Smith captured Billy B. in the field revealing a cut horse leg and ruined sulky. The minister borrowed a sulky to resume racing amid cheers but did not win any heat or prize.
