Maryland Governor pledges $500 million for school construction
Governor Parris N. Glendening vows to boost education funding with $500 million for school construction over the next two fiscal years and about $11 million in fiscal 2000 for new teachers statewide. He targets first and second grade reading and seventh grade math, aiming to add 1,100 certified teachers and 7,500 new classrooms to reduce class sizes. County leaders, including Montgomery County Executive Douglas Duncan, back the plan as the education agenda continues.
