Sinkhole law tests Maryland quarries and geologists

A Maryland rule creates a zone of dewatering around limestone quarries where the owner is presumed liable for dry wells or sinkholes. Geologists at the Maryland Department of the Environment struggle to draw these zones across 18 quarries in four counties, amid disputes over karst terrain and water table declines. The measure could place millions in liability on quarries, which generate about $39 million in annual business and employ thousands.
