New rubber treads could be made in Cumberland
University of Maryland researchers have developed wear resistant rubber treads for Army tanks and propose manufacturing at the idled Kelly Springfield Tire Co plant in Cumberland. With a 1984 grant, they bolted a new rubber to tank tracks and achieved 60 percent wear improvement and greater aging resistance, aiming to restart the plant for truck tires or tank pads.
