Community voices question a nearly two million dollar county surplus revealed in the annual audit. Critics urge action on housing for low income families, road and bridge repairs, snow clearance, and public services, arguing the surplus should address essential needs rather than growth in reserves.
A Frederick High School stock judging team finished fifth at a county event held in Frederick. In Washington County, a pedestrian on South Market Street bridge fell into a ditch but was unhurt, while Halloween enforcement plans and weather notes appeared in city reports. A reader praised the new newspaper’s bright white newsprint and dark print, signed by Bernard B. Myers of Germantown, Maryland.
After a 15 minute discussion the HRC voted to continue the housing dispute in executive session barred to press and the public. The panel urged Frederick County and City governments to hire a housing consultant amid a $1.9 million surplus debate and calls for action on housing shortages.

Larry the Christmas ghost returns to Emmitsburg each year to play a familiar tune. The tale urges precaution with jack lanterns and locked doors as ghosts may be anywhere in the county.
The Frederick County Board of Education will hold its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday afternoon, November 6 at 2 p.m. Regular meetings are normally held the first Wednesday of each month.
