Lost humpback Humphrey narrows escape to Pacific
Humphrey the 45 ton humpback, lost two weeks in the Sacramento River Delta, moved seaward toward the Pacific under a government backed plan. Army Navy and Coast Guard boats helped shepherd him past the Rio Vista bridge as wildlife experts used underwater noisemakers and pipes to keep him from detouring inland. Spectators lined riverbanks while officials warned against crowding the animal and urged space to ease his journey toward Alaska to Mexican breeding grounds.
