Chase Merritt S&L Deal Ties Maryland Banking Change
A secretive Maryland General Assembly session resolved a complex rescue of Merritt Commercial Savings & Loan and two healthier Chesapeake S&Ls led by Chase Manhattan. The deal costs Maryland $25 million, frees $500 million in deposits, and grants Chase banking privileges while shielding Klein from civil suit for two years. Senate delays and party politics surrounded the outcome as leaders Cardin Steinberg and Hughes pressed for approval.
