United States appeals to Soviets over disarmament stance
In a UN Polical Committee session United States envoy James J. Wadsworth urged Moscow to drop Khrushchev's all or nothing disarmament demands and keep doors open for East West talks. He warned that a step by step path could yield total disarmament in nine years or less with genuine urgency from both sides. A Soviet bloc delegate attacked Washington and threatened to walk out unless Khrushchev's proposals become the sole negotiation basis.
