Nuns Trade Habits for Farm Life in Appalachian Tennessee
Two former Dominican nurses Alicia Salzmann and Patricia Grimes, renamed by life on a rugged 70 acre Hancock County hillside, tend 20 goats, work dawn and dusk milking, and live off garden produce. They left nursing in 1968 to create a retreat that became a self sufficient farm sheltered from the nearest paved road ten miles away. The women describe neighborly acceptance and a vow to stay despite hardship as they plan a seventh winter on the land.
