Verdun drives shift French front in dramatic Meuse action
Paris reports a surprise Verdun counter move along the Meuse front as German lines on the right bank gave way for four and a half miles. About 3600 prisoners captured. Fort Douaumont-Vaux area now back under French pressure with Vaux fort still German held. General Nivelle directed operations after observing German withdrawals, striking to widen the breach toward Souville, Wavres, and surrounding positions.
