Fog in parts this morning did not ease the drought situation as Frederick County holds a critical forest fire risk. A small blaze near Highland road was extinguished with about an acre of rice timber destroyed. Watershed employees guard mountain roads and the watershed remains off limits. Only one large fire west of Lander persists. logs burn faintly but controlled. No rain in sight as forecasts call for continued sunny warm weather with upper 70s highs into next week.

United Fire Company Names New Driver Baker
William E. Baker of the city was named as a driver for the United Fire Company filling one of two vacancies after R. Elwood Shankle resigned to join a Florida Fire Company. Shankle had served since September 1948. Keefer will leave for Rockville Fire Company before November 15. Baker undergoes extensive first aid training at the company the University of Maryland and area hospitals. Dr. Marrone praised both men for their service and training.
