Congressional leaders push a deficit reduction package with tax hikes and spending limits while President Bush signs a temporary funding bill to avert a partial government shutdown. The House passed the stopgap 380 to 45 with the Senate acting without a vote.
The United States joined a 15 to 0 Security Council vote condemning Israel for not cooperating with a UN investigation into Temple Mount killings in Jerusalem. Bush appealed to Shamir but Israel refused, saying Washington was pressured to support the measure to keep Arab coalition ties. The resolution urged a UN delegation to report on the killings and to propose protections for Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.
Jurors in Frederick County Circuit Court heard two appraisers value the 240 acre Schrodel farm at roughly 2 million dollars amid a condemnation suit. Bowen and Lennhoff cited comparable sales and undeveloped land value as factors. The case stems from the county seeking to open a new landfill near Reichs Ford Road.
Frederick County treasurer race tightens as Martina Ann Brittain seeks re election while Dale Sharrer a Rocky Ridge tax accountant challenges her for the post. Brittain pushes public appearances and candidate nights to boost votes. Sharrer notes voters are unaware the treasurer is elected and joins the campaign trail.
Republican Mr Sharrer age 43 campaigns by putting up signs and bumper stickers while noting the treasurer implements county policy as set by commissioners. Democrat Ms Brittain age 58 voices concern about growth and its impact on her office, saying she feels they have a handle on growth now though Sharrer disputes that assessment.
At a Frederick County forum, McClellan and Littrell oppose charter government citing higher costs and risks to checks and balances. Several commissioners show support, while candidates stress growth, safety, and non discrimination as key issues for the upcoming choice.
Frederick's Housing Authority will overhaul Carver Apartments on Madison Street with a 2.89 million WT Urban Development grant. The 60 unit complex built in 1952 houses 152 residents and will receive full remodels, new walls, cabinets, and kitchen appliances. Displacement will be minimized with phased work.
