Pleasant Plains DAR marks 13th birthday celebration

Pleasant Plains Damascus Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution observed its 13th birthday on October 12 with a turkey dinner hosted by Montgomery Methodist Church Women. Mrs Emerson Slocum presided, Mrs Dorothy Probert led patriotic songs with Mrs Sharon Warfield, and Sue Boyer outlined the National Defense program. A planned speaker, the late General Goodloe Byrnt, could not attend. Barbara Marts presented a film and discussion on Price of Fence and Freedom. Next meeting set for November 6 at 10:30 a.m. at Mrs Emerson Slatum’s home with Peter Behm and Cherokee Indians as guest speakers. Members urged to bring gifts for veterans for Martinsburg Veterans Hospital. National Defense luncheon planned for November at Green Spring Lodge, Luberaville.

72 year old stays fit with jogging and swimming

Norwalk, Conn. AP Henry Francis, 72, keeps fit by jogging three miles daily and swimming, despite strained ligaments and heel spurs. He ran the Heart Association Marathon last May in under an hour and promotes Lifestyle Awareness Month. He emphasizes balance, not fanaticism, and cites volunteering, reading, and church work as daily duties. Francis attributes his health shift to a WW II era Air Force start and later Blue Cross & Blue Shield work, with regular physical activity as a key personal goal.
