Compromise Measure Sparks Senate Action Amid Silver Debate
A compromise on the Sherman law repeal is reported by the Senate majority with key features public. It sets Oct 1 as the act’s effective date and directs silver bullion to be converted into dollars while retiring small notes and replacing with silver coin or certificates. The administration remains firm for unconditional repeal, with House passage expected swiftly though Senate flow remains uncertain amid ongoing speeches by Jones and Teller.
