Lockheed bets on radical new fighter jet contract race
Lockheed Martin pursues the Joint Strike Fighter project in a high stakes competition with Boeing for a potential $200 billion five year contract. The Pentagon could award an initial portion on Oct 26 amid GAO concerns over cost, timetables, and unproven tech beyond ground tests. If Lockheed wins, Fort Worth would assemble the JSF and Texas could gain tens of thousands of jobs. Boeing also seeks a major lift in St Louis and broader defense gains amid post 9 11 pressures.

Radar failure routes 27 hours of vanished planes at BWI
BWI controllers report a 27 hour August radar outage at Baltimore Washington, with ASR 9 and CENRAP-Plus backups failing. About 1,700 flights passed through the airspace and 800 used the airport, with no collisions. Controllers tracked planes by paper notes as radar images disappeared up to 20 miles. FAA and Maryland officials said safety was not compromised and the backup radar functioned, though access to the problem was limited.
