Death recalls famous duel between OConnell and D Esterre
The obituary recalls Daniel O Connell grandson of the Liberator who died at Darrynane Abbey in his eighty fourth year. He was a Kerry magistrate deputy lieutenant and high sheriff in 1860. A Dublin picture shows him with the pistol used in the duel. The 1815 challenge began after D Esterre accused O Connell of a beggarly Dublin corporation dispute. They dueled at Bishop s Court County Kildare. O Connell wounded Esterre in the groin. Esterre died after two days. O Connell s pistols were Rigby s Particulars given by an English officer. Esterre s daughter married Lieutenant Roberts of the Royal Navy who commanded Sirius and President on famous voyages.
