Whispers of Folk Remedies and Snake Tales in Hills
In a rugged hillside vignette, locals recall old time cures from mothers, a WWI flu tale with two fried fish, and a surgeon Dr. Melvin Lea admitting fear of snakes. A doorway of autumnal relief and lively anecdotes closes with a call for bravado.
Eisenhower frames 1958 race as unity bid in California
President Eisenhower urged voters to back a Republican Congress in California, framing the race as a fight between a unified, forward-looking government and a radical Democratic wing. He attacked left-wing governance and stressed strength against communism while signaling support for GOP candidates Knowland and Knight amid a coast-to-coast campaign. A separate note reports the Supreme Court declined to review James Burkhamer’s execution case in West Virginia for the 1937 Charlene Vilain murder.

Nixon To Visit Only Britain Next Month
Washington AP reports Vice President Nixon will tour only Britain in late November, denying plans for a broader Western Europe swing. State Department said it would have welcomed more stops and that the schedule reflects no fear of demonstrations like those in Latin America. Nixon is to attend the dedication of an American chapel at St Pauls Cathedral in London on November 26. The department stressed no guidance to avoid Italy or France.
