Frederick Smoke Eaters Tie Firemen In Opening Game

The Frederick Athletic Club’s smoke eaters rallied late to force a 6–6 tie with the Baltimore Firemen in the season opener at McCurdy Field. Barry’s 50 yard run sparked the comeback after Frederick faced a slow start, with Dick Butler and Day signaling the reverse to set up the decisive play. Substitutes and injuries hampered Frederick early, but the late surge, led by Grove, Dorsey, and Barry, kept the game within reach as both teams missed chances to claim victory. The upcoming matchup against the 30th Coast Artillery in Washington looms as Grove plans to resolve player eligibility issues.

The specimen, said to be the largest caught in this section, was brought to the city and stored at William H. Moore’s mill plant on East Patrick Street. Keefer plans to have the fish mounted for a fishing cabin. The fish’s mouth could take fists, with seven and eight inch stingers and a large head. The event was reported Sunday night.
