Hopkins develops prostate cancer vaccine study
Johns Hopkins Oncology Center researchers report a gene engineered vaccine that triggers T cells and antibodies to attack prostate cancer. In 11 patients, tumor material was grown in culture, GMF-CSE gene added, and the vaccine injected into the thighs. Tumor shrinkage occurred in eight patients, but scientists warn it is early and not yet conclusive.

Maryland to use surplus to cover Medicaid overpayments
Maryland will allocate about $100 million of its near 700 million budget surplus to cover $202 million in Medicaid overpayments to HMOs from 1998 and 1999 caused by actuarial errors at UMBC and Johns Hopkins. Adjustments over two years have narrowed the deficit but remain. HMOs have pushed for higher annual payments beyond the current $980 million HealthChoice funding.
