Wells associates clash with officials over Detrick cleanup

Maryland Department of the Environment officials skipped Tuesday's RAB meeting prompting frustration among members. Smith Assaulted Bank and Pleaded, Judge Sentences Set

Frederick County Circuit Court Judge John H. Tisdale overturned prior convictions in the Smith case but accepted a plea bargain. Smith admitted armed robbery and possession of a short barreled shotgun, with concurrent five year terms dated from his 1988 arrest, totaling up to 42 years with parole potential. He robbed a Farmers and Mechanics Bank ATM of $200 using a 12 gauge shotgun and was later arrested in Montgomery County while attempting a station robbery. Knight identified the gun and clothing.

Intelligent highway sensors to test wind at Maryland bridges

Sensors along Monocacy River Bridge in Emmitsburg and at Mount Airy and South Mountain measure wind to support an intelligent highway system. Funded by the Federal Highway Administration, the system is already used in Washington, Virginia, and Colorado with winter operation planned.
