Tonight expect cloudy skies with a small chance of rain. Lows near freezing to the mid 30s, winds southwest 10 to 20 mph shifting northwest. Wednesday brings mainly cloudy to partly sunny with highs from the upper 30s to near 60, and brisk northwest winds.
ROCKVILLE A trolley collision at Northwest Branch Regional Park injures up to 15 and sends many to hospitals after a head on strike. Conductor Barry Smith appeared to fail to secure clearance by phone before the move. The National Transportation Safety Board opened an inquiry as investigators awaited Smith’s release from hospital.
The Montgomery County board of education, citing 131 more students than projected, votes to request about $175,000 from the county government to fund 5.8 additional teachers and extra textbooks. In a separate action, the board awards a $20,482,500 Watkins Mill High School contract to L F Jennings Co Inc after rebidding.
Frederick County commissioners reviewed four Middletown bypass alternatives and sent the plan to the county planning commission for study with a December public hearing possible. They also approved a 100 by 50 foot model car track in the park near the high school funded and maintained by the Middletown Recreation Council with handicap access, while ensuring noise remains acceptable.
The Frederick County sheriff's department probes property damage at a City of Frederick storage garage entrance to the watershed near Mountaindale. A vehicle reportedly pushed the door off track, with damage estimated at 200 dollars. Deputy Brian Wilbiar found the scene at 10 p.m. Sunday and continues the inquiry. Separately, a loaded Pepsi Cola machine was stolen from Mount Tabor Park on Motter Station Road between Saturday night and Sunday morning.
