Southern states near plan to dispose low level waste
ATLANTA AP Southern states near agreement on a regional plan for disposing low level radioactive waste that could limit Barnwell DC landfill users to southern states. Nine state negotiators met to form an interstate commission to govern disposal in the Southeast. The panel would decide each state's role in handling mildly radioactive wastes from research medical centers and the nuclear power industry. South Carolina would handle wastes but could exclude others. The Barnwell site has 150 years of storage, and Georgia favors not building new disposal sites. States involved include Alabama Florida Georgia Kentucky Maryland Mississippi North Carolina South Carolina Tennessee Virginia with Kentucky absent today.
