Twelve Injured In Weekend Accidents
Eight Frederick County residents were among the twelve injured over the weekend in local traffic accidents. A high speed chase Sunday night on West South and De Grange Street ended in a three car wreck at 10:10 p.m. Three passengers were treated at Frederick Memorial Hospital and released. Cpl. Robert Brown and Wilson attempted to out-run police. a red light violation led to the collision at De Grange and Patrick Streets. A hearing is set for Nov 19.

In April 1917, Frederick County citizens formed the Frederick County Chapter of the American Red Cross with Joseph D. Baker as moving spirit and Hammond Urner Ernest Helfenstein and J Travers Thomas as officers. The chapter pledged to relay relief and communicate with armed forces and to support national and international relief efforts. The movement relied on volunteers and donations via the United Givers Fund and later partnered with the Community Chest in 1958. During World War I the county supported the war effort, and in fall 1918 the flu epidemic prompted a Red Cross hospital at Montevue with 25 beds, nurses, and doctors, treating 54 patients. The Production Corps made surgical dressings and jackets. initial headquarters were at the YMCA on North Court Street, now housed in the Federated Charities Building at 22 A.
