Frederick County Sees 17 Of 27 Elementary Schools Over Capacity

The Frederick County Council of Governments heard a growth report from Raymond V. Barnes noting a surge in student numbers. He said 17 of 27 elementary schools exceed full capacity, with many others in the 90s and high 80s, and outlined three new schools to add 2,169 seats by 1995 along with 104 portable classrooms. The plan includes five options to ease overcrowding such as year-round schooling and shifted schedules.

Board approves middle school course changes in FCPS

Frederick County Board of Education approved a curriculum change by a 5 to 1 vote on Monday night. The plan ends the year long music requirement and adds yearlong electives like foreign language technology and communications. Officials expect about 160000 dollars for materials and training with possible budget funding.

County schools enroll 1208 more students this fall

Ray Barnes, director of planning and facilities, told the school board that 1,208 new students raised county enrollment to 31,781 this fall. He noted the fourth straight year of increases over 1,100, with many schools over 100 percent capacity across seventeen elementary, three middle, and four high schools.

County backs loans for two local businesses

Frederick County Commissioners unanimously agreed to participate in two loans of about 2 million dollars each to Trans-Tech Inc and Solarex. The county will act as intermediary, routing 1.8183 million dollar state loans to the firms with additional county loans. Trans-Tech aims to add about 150 jobs after securing Motorola orders as Solarex remains inside the city.

Planners OK Burkittsville subdivision approval

Burkittsville planners approved a three lot subdivision on a 15 acre parcel within the town, restricting access to 20 feet wide. The plan halves the possible 10 plus lots under current zoning. Landowner Jeff Shisler grew up in the village and aims to calm impact while county officials still must approve the remainder of the Shisler farm.
