Maryland bankers seek higher ceilings on credit cards and loans

The Maryland Bankers Association plans to ask the General Assembly to raise maximum interest ceilings for credit card purchases and installment loans. Lenders say current rates fail to cover rising costs driven by higher discount rates, with 12 percent already seen as inadequate. The association urges 15 percent for installment loans over 3500 and elimination for loans under 3500, while national banks charge 13 percent on such loans. Edward J McNeal of the Retail Merchants Association backs the proposals, warning of reduced consumer credit without caps.
