Frederick auto dealers report about 2400 names on lists for new passenger cars with demand outpacing supply for two to three years. Estimated 650 new cars have entered the city this year including some trucks. Used cars are scarce and prices range well above list at auctions. speculation and jockeystyle activity is limited locally.
At about 648 this morning a collision at West South and Center streets left one sedan with major damage. Daniel Calvin Swomley of Frederick Route 4 and Ralph Edward Goodsell of Frederick Route 4 traveled east and south on South Bentz respectively, and Swomley’s car was struck near the center, spun about 67 feet, and ended partly on the south curb. Goodsell’s vehicle sustained minor damage. Officer Ralph Potts filed reckless driving charges against both drivers.
Government delegates and union leaders said they were close to a settlement ending a maritime strike that shut French ports since yesterday. About 40,000 maritime workers seek a 15 percent raise while 30,000 transport workers threaten Paris buses and subways, with generators sabotaged and partial service restored on one bus line. Premiers Ramadier warns of a political motive and will not reopen talks until workers return.
Fire at the Roosevelt, New Orleans largest hotel, started in a ventilator shaft above the first floor kitchen and spread up a 14 story shaft. Firefighters from three stations battled the blaze for 90 minutes with negligible damage, while guests evacuated and mingled in the Blue Room.
Baltimore reports Lt Sarsitis found a bloody footprint in the Halethorpe tourist cabin where Charles R. Vaughn was found beaten and nude. Police consider robbery as a motive. the print suggests a young man tracked the crime. Authorities note Vaughn was a non smoker and the cigarette showed no lipstick marks.
The new forecast says a cool weekend is likely across parts of the midwest after an October heat wave that kept temperatures 10 to 20 degrees above normal from the Rockies to the Atlantic coast. Readings climbed into the 80s in many areas, with Kansas City at 87 and Des Moines at 85, while Pacific coast regions stayed near normal.

Washington D C October 17 General Superintendent Nair G Maxson announces Arthur C Bopst in Baltimore as District Superintendent R 3 S District 7 since 1947 and serving in postal service since 1920 He takes the post October 15 succeeding the late Harry R Miller and has prior duties as Assistant District Superintendent since 1946.
An official of the French Intercontinental Transport Airlines said 30 passengers on a plane that forced landed off Carena, Spain were safe and would be brought back to France by train.
Washington reports the Commodity Credit Corporation may sell American grain and edibles at cut rates to Europe without a new congressional session. The plan requires congressional reimbursement when the January session begins. Officials note CCC cannot loan to or defer payments by foreign nations but can sell food below US prices to aid relief. Secretary Anderson warns winter wheat crops loom, suggesting export focus on plentiful dried fruits beans and peas if needed.
William John Shankle of Rocky Springs was acquitted in Peoples Court after foggy road conditions on Route 40 east of Frederick. State Trooper Charles D. McLane testified that the defendant was not on the correct side. Magistrate Alton Y. The bigamy indictment of Morris Cramer of New York, extradited from California, is set for trial in Circuit Court on Tuesday. His first wife funded his bring here and will be the principal prosecution witness as the case nears the end of the criminal docket.
