Release of convict triggers attack on MontCo sheriff
In Rockville, the inadvertent release of a dangerous rape suspect prompted a wide manhunt and sharpened political attacks on Montgomery County Sheriff James Young. Bernard Smith, a 25 year old Washington DC resident, had bond set at 150000 and faces first degree rape and kidnapping charges while awaiting trial in the Montgomery County Judicial Circuit. Wild comments from deputies accuse jailers of mishandling the release and say Smith is dangerous, with police noting a brutal alleged crime record and prior kidnap of a Bethesda attorney in 1990. Smith was last seen near North Washington Street toward the Pizza Oven on Jefferson Street wearing a white shirt blue sweatshirt and blue jeans.
