Tugantine Norfolk Rebel sails into fuel savings and grants
Norfolk Rebel a sail assisted tug built by Capt Lane Briggs uses wind power to cut fuel costs by 36 to 40 percent and save time on towing and salvage from Cape Charles to Newport News. The vessel, designed by Merrit Walter, has 30 years at sea behind Briggs and has drawn a $74,464 Virginia Sea Grant grant for Virginia Institute of Marine Science sea trials. A Senate bill backed by Warner and Matsunaga would extend a 15 percent tax credit for sail equipped vessels with a 30 tax relief to states.
