Entrapment question stuns Frederick County drug case
A Frederick County jury failed to decide if James Cornell and wife Phyllis Hiltner Cornell were entrapped into drug sales to police after two days of hearings and nearly 10 hours of deliberation. Jurors acquitted James Cornell of conspiracy to sell marijuana while remaining charges and the entrapment issue were left unresolved.

Flag and statue added to Vietnam memorial
The Fine Arts Commission chose a side placement for the flagpole and a three-figure statue at the Vietnam memorial, accepting a two-piece design that preserves Maya Lin's black granite walls as a backdrop. Sculptor Frederick Hart hailed the decision as Solomon-like while veterans and critics weighed the compromise. Interior Secretary James Watt had approved the center-piece plan earlier.

City builds new skating rink in Baker Park for winter use
Frederick prepares a 100 by 300 foot skating area in Baker Park near Culler Lake. City public works director Strine says the rink will hold four to six inches of water, be seeded to protect the lawn, and use pumped Carroll Creek water. The $5,000 project includes lighting and will be ready in about three weeks for winter skating. If popular, the city may add permanent lighting and extra facilities.
