Maryland to statue Thurgood Marshall at State House
The Board of Public Works approved a 286000 design and construction contract for a 7 foot bronze Thurgood Marshall Memorial statue near the State House. The winning design by Antonio T. Mendez includes a granite wall, two benches with figures, and a life size Donald Murray on one bench, with two child figures on the other, to symbolize Marshall’s civil rights work and school desegregation cases. The memorial, across from the governor’s mansion, aims to honor the Maryland native who became the first Black Supreme Court justice, with completion expected next October.
