Optimism Over Meat Prices Questioned by Officials
Government forecasts of lower meat prices by late 1949 may be over optimistic. While feed costs are down due to a record grain crop, farmers hesitate to expand livestock production. Iowa State economist Carl C. Malone warned prices could fall before new meat animals are ready for market. The view was echoed by other western corn belt economists. Stating this, reporters noted continued caution among farmers despite favorable feed-to-livestock price relations.
