Town seeks removal from wrongful death suit in 2000 crash
A town asks to be dropped from a wrongful death suit over a crash between Middletown Fire Engine 72 and a sport utility vehicle at a local intersection in August 2000. Donna Sandberg, of Herndon, was driving a Dodge Durango that collided with the fire engine, which Sgt Bill Metcalf piloted. Sandberg and Liberty Mutual Insurance contend no legal connection exists between the town and the fire company. Investigators say the engine’s siren and lights were active as it was broadsided by the SUV.

Hopkins Hospital seeks 7 percent rate rise to fund bonds
Johns Hopkins Hospital plans a 7 percent rate increase after a FY ending June margin of 1.9 percent, down from 3 percent four years ago. The higher margin would support issuing hundreds of millions in bonds for seven years of new construction, potentially lifting rates at other Maryland hospitals as the system covers one eighth of state patients.
