In New Castle Pennsylvania Judge William E Porter sentenced three Italians connected to a string of Black Hand outrages. Convictions and guilty pleas yielded a total of 71 years, with one man at 10 years, seven men at five years each, eight at three years, and another at two years.
Arctic steamer Frithjof, which accompanied the Wellman Chicago Record-Herald expedition to Spitzbergen, was lost off Cape Laganes Iceland October 5. The captain and 15 crew drowned. The engineer clung to a plank and drifted ashore. Frithjof, damaged by ice, could not withstand a storm on the voyage home to Norway. Swedish watchmen report New York Yacht Club reply to Royal Swedish Yacht Club on America’s Cup conditions, but Admiral Haig will not reveal contents until after the yacht club meeting.
