Towson Frederick Teen Charged in Hospital Counselor Murder

Benjamin Garris, a Towson Frederick area teen, faces murder charges for the hospital counselor killing. Police say he planned a crime spree and was described as intent on destruction by Baltimore County investigators.

Teen charged as adult in Baltimore counselor murder

Sam Bowerman said investigators have notes by the youth outlining a crime spree including breaking into a gun shop. Police held a press conference after the boy escaped Sheppard Pratt and charged him with the murder of Sharon Edwards, 28, of the Baltimore area, stabbed at 2:30 a.m. Sunday. The 16-year-old, from 24 College Ave., left Fordham Cottage where he lived as a patient. He may be accompanied by Jane DeCosta, 15, of Cockeysville.

Residents protest plan for 13 room motell at 500 W Patrick St

About 25 Frederick residents packed a Planning Commission meeting to oppose a 13 room motel proposed above a pawnbroker shop at 500 West Patrick Street. Critics warned of nightly disturbances and unknown management and clientele. One neighbor called the site a threat to a stable neighborhood near a middle school.

Derailment Probe Probes Sabotage on Amtrak Sunset Limited

Federal agents joined safety teams at a desert site 55 miles southwest of Phoenix after saboteurs removed track fasteners and altered warning systems on Amtrak's Sunset Limited. One dead, at least 78 hurt as four cars lay in a dry wash. A note signed Sons of Gestapo referenced Waco and Ruby Ridge. Gov Symington urged decisive action against those responsible.

Miss Wheelchair Maryland: Benita Gold Wins Laurel Title

Frederick County music teacher Benita Gold, 27, was named Miss Wheelchair Maryland at a Laurel contest in its 22nd year. The event emphasizes speaking ability and achievement rather than looks. Gold plans to advocate ADA awareness across Maryland and compete nationally in Atlanta next summer. She has taught at Frederick and Urbana high schools and performed saxophone for dignitaries including President Clinton and leaders of Japan.

Frederick Walkersville rail link rebuilt after hurricane cut

The Frederick to Walkersville rail line, severed in June 1972 when Hurricane Agnes swept away a Monocacy River bridge, is being rebuilt by Walkersville Southern Railroad with state funds. Construction will pour the center river pylon and lift two 72 ton girders, aiming to have trains running by next season. The excursion railway operates monthly from Walkersville toward the river and is expanding as track work continues.
